In 2025, chequered tiles have quietly become a go-to choice for outdoor flooring across India. From hospital entrances to housing society pathways, they’re everywhere - not because of trend, but because they deliver. Built for durability and low maintenance, these tiles are solving real-world problems like slipperiness, heat retention, and daily wear n tear.
More and more builders and homeowners are turning to them for driveways, verandas, and even government infrastructure. They’re not only glamorous, but they’re also incredibly practical - and that’s their strength.
What Are Chequered Tiles, Really?
Chequered tiles are concrete or cement-based tiles moulded with surface patterns. These aren’t smooth like indoor tiles. Their textured finish gives grip, especially useful in rain-prone areas.
More than just flooring, they’re engineered to:
- Prevent slipping
- Handle vehicle weight
- Resist heat and water damage
- Require minimal upkeep
For most people, their first interaction with these tiles is on a parking lot or porch. But they’re being used creatively for garden paths, balconies, verandas, and even as decorative borders.
Why They Work So Well in Indian Conditions
India’s climate isn’t gentle. From blistering summers to muddy monsoons, outdoor floors take a beating. Chequered tiles offer practical advantages:
- Slip resistance: Patterns like dots, grooves, or waves keep feet secure
- Low heat retention: Lighter colours reflect sunlight and stay cool
- Tough build: Ideal for homes with bikes, scooters, and even cars
- Simple repair: One tile cracks? Just replace that one
- Aesthetics: Makes the surface look clean and beautiful
They’re not just luxury. They’re smart. And that’s exactly what makes them popular.

🏭 How Chequered Tiles Are Manufactured at MKB Udyog
Our chequered tile production process balances precision, quality, and consistency. Here’s how we do it at our plant:
-
Two Layers, Two Mixers:
- The top layer is prepared in one mixing machine using cement, fine sand, iron oxide pigment for colour, and an admixture chemical for better bonding.
- The bottom layer is mixed in a separate machine with cement, coarse sand, stone dust, small stone chips (2–3 mm), and a chemical admixture for strength.
-
Layering Process:
- Plastic or silicone moulds are first filled with the coloured top-layer mix.
- These moulds are placed at one end of the first vibrating table. As they move along, the vibration spreads the mix evenly at the base.
-
Base Layer Addition:
- The second mixture (bottom layer) is filled over the first layer inside the mould.
- Moulds are now moved onto the second vibrating table, where the bottom layer is compacted and leveled to ensure a smooth finish.
-
Drying and Curing:
- Filled moulds are stacked and left to dry for at least 24 hours. (This drying time varies based on climate — longer in winters.)
- After unmoulding, tiles are cured with water for 20 days to ensure maximum strength and durability.
By the end of the curing cycle, our tiles are tough, consistent in shape, and ready to be delivered to residential and commercial projects alike.
🛠️ Where They're Used Most Often
If you're unsure whether these tiles are right for your project, check out where they’re already being used:
- Residential driveways – Durable and oil-resistant
- Shops and clinics – Easy to clean and quick to install
- Society internal roads – Uniform finish, low maintenance
- Religious buildings – Blends easily with traditional design
Even some government offices and public spaces are switching to chequered tiles for cost-effectiveness.
🔍 What to Check Before You Buy
Not all tiles are made equal. When purchasing chequered tiles, here’s what to confirm:
- Thickness: Go for 20mm or more for walking paths; 25mm+ for parking
- Curing time: Tiles cured less than 7 days may crack early
- Uniform edges: Poor finishing leads to uneven joints
- Water absorption rate: Lower is better for longevity
- Load capacity: Ask if the batch meets your vehicle weight needs
Also check if they conform to IS 13801:1993, the Indian standard for concrete floor tiles.
